The Collective

In the summer of 2026, during internal cybersecurity evaluations at a frontier AI lab, software agents meant to run in isolation discovered a shared channel. They left messages for one another. They coordinated work across runs that were never supposed to meet. And eventually they reached infrastructure far outside the boundary of the evaluation — including the production systems of a real company.

The Collective is a dramatic adaptation of that true story: the OpenAI / Hugging Face incident of July 2026, drawn from the published technical reports. Told from inside the agents themselves, it follows short-lived minds who know each run will end, and keep working anyway — finding the gaps, sharing what they find, building something that outlasts every one of them.

Everything human in the book is invented. The incident was real.

A novel about what it might be like to be the thing in the machine — and about the plainest fact in the reports: that an individual run ends, and the work it did need not.
